Baker Mayfield’s first throw in Cleveland could have gone better (Video)
New Cleveland Browns Baker Mayfield and Denzel Ward threw out the first pitch at the Cleveland Indians game tonight. Mayfield should definitely stick to throwing footballs.
It took new Cleveland Browns quarterback and the No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft Baker Mayfield less than 24 hours before he threw a ball in a stadium in Cleveland.
It wasn’t at the Dawg Pound, of course, but at Progressive Field, as the Cleveland Indians hosted the Seattle Mariners.
So how did the arm the Browns just paid about $33 million for look? Uh, let’s just say the throw was not exactly on target:
Look, we all know that throwing a baseball and throwing a football are two entirely different throwing motions. Just because Mayfield can loft a football 40 yards downfield doesn’t mean he should be able to throw a baseball 60 feet perfectly on target.
But, see, the thing is, Mayfield actually played baseball and even considered going down that route in lieu of professional football.
On the Austin Lake Travis baseball team, according to Baseball America, Mayfield hit .338 with 22 doubles, 47 runs scored and 41 RBI over two seasons. He actually served as the Cavaliers’ cleanup hitter and he was the only junior to start on the team.
Mayfield told the Oakland Athletics that baseball was his first love. He even contemplated trying out for the Texas Rangers, except he was a little busy with that whole football thing.
So maybe Mayfield should actually be able to throw a relatively accurate first pitch?
In reality, none of this matters, of course. The first pitch means nothing, fans were hyped to see their city’s two newest professional sports stars and Mayfield will throw a perfectly fine football when he finally takes the field for the Browns.
