Morocco: Medhi Benatia

It’s a World Cup 20 years in the making for Morocco, and after not conceding a goal on their way to Russia, they’re another promising African outfit looking to impress. Among their ranks are talented youngsters such as Ajax’s Hakim Ziyech and Real Madrid’s Achraf Hackimi and experienced veterans such as Nabil Dirar, Younes Belhanda and Nordin Amrabat.

Unsurprisingly, it’s the captain at the center of defense that will be key for Morocco in Russia. Medhi Benatia has been a consistent fixture for Morroco since his debut in 2008. After a difficult season at Bayern Munich, Benatia has been rebuilding his reputation over the last two seasons with Juventus. After a decent first season in Turin, the center-back has found a way into Massimiliano Allegri’s plans this season as they challenge for a seventh straight scudetto. Since a breakout season with Roma in 2014, Benatia has gained a reputation for being strong and good at playing the ball out from the back. Perhaps more crucially for his national team, Benatia is also very good at organizing his defense.

If they wish to shock the world as they did in 1986, when they became the first African team to reach the World Cup knockout rounds, then their defensive record from qualifying will need to continue. Benatia, as both captain and as the best center-back in Morocco’s back line, will be crucial to that form carrying over to World Cup this summer.

Honorable mentions: Nordin Amrabat, Hakim Ziyech
