Shortstop, high-end spend

Paul DeJong, $4,300

.400/.400/1.200 with 1 HR in 5 at-bats

Even though Trevor Williams is an option, DeJong is still an interesting option. First, Williams does still give up runs and walks. Secondly, the Pirates bullpen is not very good if the cards can knock him out of the game early. DeJong is really tuning up righty pitching with a .989 OPS, .315 batting average and a .423 wOBA. Offensively, Dejong seems like he’s taken a step forward this season and he’s certainly in play tonight as a high end option.

Mid-range

Andrelton Simmons, $2,800

.222/.222/.333 with 0 HR in 9 at-bats

Simmons gets to square off against Masahiro Tanaka and that doesn’t seem like the best matchup to target. One of the reasons he’s in play tonight is because Simmons just doesn’t strikeout very often. His career strikeout rate is under 10 percent and he’s grown as an offensive player through his career. His wOBA is a respectable .328 against righties this year and that’s in line with what Simmons did in 2017 as well. He’s typically not a power hitter but he did just hit two bombs the other night. As we said earlier, Tanaka gives up more than his fair share of homers so at just $2,800, Simmons could be just fine this evening.

Value

Zack Cozart, $2,500

.333/.500/.333 with 0 HR in 3 at-bats

If you desperately needed the extra $300, you could just take a stab at Cozart instead of Simmons.  He likely has a lower floor but you could argue he has the higher ceiling since he’s got more power potential. Cozart can hit righties and he could take Tanaka yard without much of a problem if things go badly for the Yankee starter.
