The Tampa Bay Lightning host the Boston Bruins in Game 1 of their second-round series. Here’s everything you need to know to watch.
On Saturday afternoon, the Tampa Bay Lightning will host the Boston Bruins in Game 1 of their second-round series. It’s a matchup that promises to be extremely exciting, as both teams look to take advantage of their depth-ridden rosters. They met on four occasions in the regular season, during which the Bruins claimed three victories, while the Bolts won once.
Shutting down Boston’s top line will be key if Tampa truly wants to advance to the Conference Finals. Brad Marchand, Patrice Bergeron and David Pastrnak looked nothing short of unstoppable early in the previous series, but were left with a tough matchup when Mike Babcock started to favor Tomas Plekanec as his shut down guy. As such, expect the Bolts to try to nail the two-way pairings as early as possible. If they manage to hold the best line in hockey off the score sheet, the task at hand should become increasingly feasible. Expect Steven Stamkos, Nikita Kucherov and the rest of the Bolts’ dynamic offense to make Boston pay for any and all mistakes.
For the Bruins, victory can come in the form of marrying offensive prowess with defensive accountability. That starts with taking full advantage of not only the top line, but also the team’s underrated depth. Marchand, Bergeron and Pastrnak often occupy the talk circuit of the hockey world, but others are more than capable of stepping up when needed. Look for Jake DeBrusk, Danton Heinen and Riley Nash to clock in big minutes in the games to come. Ask any Leafs fan — they might just be Boston’s not so secret weapon.
