So which teams made trade offers for Andrew Luck?

1. San Francisco 49ers

The 49ers made a deal with the New England Patriots to acquire Jimmy Garoppolo just ahead of last year’s trade deadline, with good results as he went 5-0 as the starter to end last season. They also committed to Garoppolo as their franchise quarterback with a five-year, $137.5 million contract early his offseason, so their need at the position is done for now.

But knowing the move they made for Garoppolo, and with an eye toward this year as last year went downhill through October, 49ers general manager John Lynch may have made a call to the Colts about Luck. Their salary cap situation would have allowed for taking on Luck’s contract easily, while of course also assuming the risk attached to his prolonged recovery from shoulder surgery.

In his initial pursuit of Garoppolo, and being told he was off-limits at that point, Lynch apparently countered by asking Bill Belichick if he would trade Tom Brady. So a similarly bold inquiry to the Colts about Luck easily could have happened. Whether it occurred last offseason, or into the 2017 season near the trade deadline before coming back to Garoppolo is now a trivial point, but it’s still interesting to think about Luck possibly landing with the 49ers.
