Catcher/First Base, High End Spend

Paul Goldschmidt, $4,500

.643/.667/.857 with 0 HR in 14 at-bats

We try not to lean too heavily on BvP (batter vs pitcher) data but it’s a little hard to totally ignore Goldschmidt against Nationals starter Gio Gonzalez. The key here is it’s not just the BvP data that puts Goldy on the radar. It’s anytime that the Diamondbacks first baseman faces a lefty on the mound. He flat out destroys them and he has for his entire career. His batting average is all the way up at .333, the OPS is 1.045, the ISO is .272 and the wOBA is .435. The real kicker is those numbers are even higher this season. Goldy is locked in and well worth the price of admission on this big slate.

Mid-Range

Carlos Santana, $3,400

.267/.389/.533 with 1 HR in 15 at-bats

Santana his hitting very poorly so far this year from a batting average standpoint but his fantasy points have still continued to be solid thanks to walks. He’s just not this bad of a hitter and I’m convinced the blowup game isn’t far away. He does have at least nine FanDuel points in six of his last nine games and he’s hitting righty pitching hard and in the air. His hard contact is over 38 percent and his fly ball rate is over 50 percent. At some point, those are going to start falling for extra bases or going over the fence. His wOBA against righties is .302 with a .175 average. His BABIP (batting average on balls in play) is an unsustainable .180. It’s just a matter of time.

Also Consider: Mitch Moreland, $2,900

Value

Kendrys Morales, $2,200

.143/.200/.143 with 0 HR in 14 at-bats

The veteran big man for the Blue Jays is quietly in a very good spot today as he faces off against Texas starter Martin Perez. Perez is a lefty and that has meant good things for Morales for the past three years. The stats for 2018 aren’t great but he’s already been on the disabled list. The last three seasons against lefties, Morales has posted a batting average of at least .298, an OPS of .771 and a wOBA of at least .333. Perez is giving up hard contact to righties at a 51.7 clip, which might be the highest in my memory for this year. In addition, righty batters are hitting .426 with a wOBA of .494 against him. A righty Blue Jays stack is in play today for sure.
