Catcher/First Base, High End Spend

Joey Votto, $4,400

.333/.625/.556 with 0 HR in 9 at-bats

When a player like Votto is doing his thing, he’s going to end up in this article somewhat frequently. If you’re playing an ace, it might be hard to spend this much on one player but Votto is in another great spot tonight. He’s up against righty pitching and he’s a very difficult out against the handedness. The Brewers are throwing Chase Anderson who has been very tough on lefty hitting so far in his career. This year is especially true as he’s giving up a .253 wOBA so far in 2018 to lefties. Votto is just on another level and is basically matchup proof.

Also Consider – Cody Bellinger, $3,900

Mid-Range

Yadier Molina, $3,000

.400/.429/1.200 with 1 HR in 5 at-bats

I love when the White Sox let James Shields pitch because there’s a pretty high chance for the opposing offense to put runs on the board. Shields has been reverse splits so far this year, being worse against righties. That works out nicely because Molina has been better against righty pitching as well and his price if back down to playable levels. The Cardinals had an off day yesterday, which means Molina will almost certainly be in the lineup. Molina is making hard contact 42.9 percent of the time against righty pitching and Shields is giving up the same contact 39 percent in 2018.

Also Consider – Brandon Belt, $3,600

Value

Chance Sisco, $2,200

N/A

The young catcher for the Orioles could be one way to save a little salary to play Scherzer or whoever else you’d like tonight. Sisco has been showing a little bit of life at the plate and the Angels are pitching Nick Tropeano, who has given up a .388 wOBA to lefty hitters so far this season. Sisco admittedly doesn’t have a ton of upside from a power perspective but he could at least get a few points tonight. Sisco has respectable metrics against lefties even if the ceiling isn’t all that high.

Also Consider – Manny Pina, $2,100(BvP data against Homer Bailey) and Matt Adams, $2,000
