Second Base, High End Spend

Yoan Moncada, $4,000

N/A

Moncada is in the midst of a legitimate breakout year right now, especially when he’s facing a righty pitcher. Michael Wacha has been tough against lefty hitters, surrendering only a .238 wOBA. Wacha has still yet to give up a home run to a lefty but he is giving up hard contact 39 percent of the time. Moncada does carry a bit of risk because his strikeout rate is so high at 38.6 percent. When he makes contact, the ball is getting crushed. Moncada has a .301 average, 1.008 OPS and a .427 wOBA. The hard contact rate is an astounding 52.9 percent so far this season.

Also Consider – Jose Altuve, $4,600

Mid-Range

Matt Carpenter, $3,100

.750/.857/1.000 with 0 HR in 4 at-bats

Tonight represents an interesting matchup for Carpenter and we have a chance to buy low if we believe in the metrics. The average and wOBA don’t look good at all but a deeper dive suggests Carpenter isn’t doing anything much differently than any other year. His wOBA has been at least .378 against righties for the last three seasons and Carpenter has ver similar hard hit rates, fly ball rates and line drive rates as the last three seasons. Perhaps facing off against one of the worst pitchers in baseball will wake up Carpenter’s bat.

Also Consider – Jed Lowrie, $3,700(a touch expensive but he’s cheaper than he has been)

Value

Wilmer Difo, $2,300

.500/.500/2.000 with 1 HR in 2 at-bats

Players are going to need a couple of punt options tonight and Difo might just fit the bill. He’s certainly nothing special and when the Nationals are healthy, he’s a bench player. Until they get healthy he’s staying in the lineup and he gets to face Pirates starter Chad Kuhl. The thing Kuhl struggles with most is lefty hitting, surrendering a .327 average and a .403 wOBA to lefties so far this season. That’s a little higher than normal by his standards but it’s not terribly out of line. Difo is a great cheap option against a very mediocre pitcher tonight.
