Early Slate – Rays at Tigers

Rays Probable Starter – Blake Snell, LHP

2.52 ERA, 0.95 WHIP 10.35 K/9

Vs LHH – .125 average, .180 wOBA 29.6 hard contact rate

Vs RHH – .209 average, .289 wOBA 27.6 hard contact rate

Snell is one of the more attractive options on the early slate, especially from a salary perspective. His strikeout ceiling is immense and you would save almost $3,000 by playing Snell instead of the one true ace on the early slate. The Tigers rate well against lefty pitchers but could be without Miguel Cabrera again today. The bottom of the Detroit lineup should really struggle against Snell if he’s on. While the budding star for the Rays is on a roll with four straight quality starts, he’s not always been the most consistent pitcher around. His career BB/9 is 4.29 but Snell has it down to 2.89 so far. There’s not a ton of options from the Detroit lineup to try and pick on Snell. The best one is likely Nicholas Castellanos as he’s destroying lefty pitching in 19 plate appearances so far. The .529 average and .569 wOBA are proof of that.

Tiger Hitters to Target

Elite Options – None

Secondary Options – Nicholas Castellanos, Miguel Cabrera(if he plays)

Tigers Probable Starter – Michael Fulmer, RHP

2.76 ERA, 1.26 WHIP 6.75 K/9

Vs LHH – .308 average, .388 wOBA 31.5 hard contact rate

Vs RHH – .208 average, .249 wOBA 27.0 hard contact rate

Michael Fulmer can be a frustrating pitcher to play hitters against. There’s nothing that really suggests he should be all that good of a pitcher but he’s productive many times out. His ERA has been under 4.00 for two full seasons. If there’s one spot that he can be had, it’s using lefty hitters against him. For this season at least, Fulmer has had his struggles against the handedness. The Rays don’t have an abundance of them in the lineup, but they have enough that we could pick and choose if we wanted to. Fulmer can get pretty far into the game which means the Tigers bullpen may not get a lot of work. He’s not a terrible play, but I’d rather find the $700 to play Snell from this game. The Rays have some interesting pieces, but nothing more.
