Fortnite Season 4 is upon us. With new locations, dances, challenges and theories upon us, here is a breakdown of what we’re liking after the first few days.
Fortnite‘s Season 4 kicked off with a bang on Tuesday — literally. The comet/meteor we’ve all been staring at for the last month cruised into Dusty Depot, along with several other smaller meteors hitting various parts of the map.
The meteors weren’t the only big reveal from Tuesday’s update. Epic Games added locations, tweaked existing locations and set themselves up for early speculation on what is next for the game. It’s far too early for this, but there are already several theories floating around about Season 5.
The new season seems to be taking on a superheroes vs villains theme, perhaps fueled by the ongoing massive success of Avengers: Infinity War. Now that we’ve all had a couple of days to explore the new parts of the map, let’s break down what was added, taken away and changed in the recent update. Here’s a brief breakdown of the best of Fortnite Season 4 so far.
First, here’s how Season 4 opened:
Map Updates
Dusty Divot – Dusty Depot was the main point of contact, thank god! The towers at Tilted are still standing (teenagers rejoice!) and Dusty bore the brunt of the impact on Tuesday night, leaving a massive crater and science base in place of the southern-most depot.
The Divot has been fun (but very difficult) to explore. Especially if you have consumed the new anti-gravity “hop rocks” that are lying around all of the new craters peppered throughout the map. These rocks allow a short period of heightened jumping abilities that make shotgunning opponents a lot more fun.
Risky Reels – That sneaky-good spot that you and your friends always went to just north of Wailing Woods is no longer sneaky. It seems that Epic caught on to your frequent visits to this place and built a drive-in theater for you and the squad to enjoy.

Risky Reels is a fun place to start a match. With an array of weapons out in the open and a crater full of hop rocks, it’s an entertaining place to get into an early scrap. The area has been good for at least one epic or legendary weapon per visit as well. After you take out the other two squads that landed with you, you get to loot the surrounding houses. Worth the risk.
Superhero Mansion – Lonely Lodge is a little less lonely now that a wealthy neighbor lives in the vicinity. The superhero mansion adds one more area to loot near the lodge, bumping the area up from a decent Duo spot to a solid Squad destination. Expect to hear more about this area as the heroes vs. villains story line heats up.
Super-villain Lair – The counterpart to the mansion is the evil lair built into the hills East of Snobby Shores. The lair includes what seems to be the tip of a nuclear warhead sticking out of the side of the mountain. Uh oh (more on that later).
Moisty Mire movie set – If you were a Moisty Mire guy (like myself), you enjoyed your long walks through the swamp, slowly collecting everything you need for a successful match before realizing you were about to spend half of it running from the storm. You may not be alone out there anymore.
Epic has added a movie set to Moisty. We don’t know what they are filming yet, but the set is packed with loot and resources, enough to draw in some players who may not have regularly spent the time out in the mire. I’m assuming this will play in to the storyline at some point. Until then, stay out of my spot, kids! Go back to Tilted Towers!
Tilted Towers – Speaking of Tilted Towers, the area wasn’t left completely unscathed. A smaller meteor crushed part of Tilted, mostly at street level, adding some anti-gravity to it’s usual heavy action.
The prison – The prison was another popular unnamed spot on the map for players to travel to. Looting it was a bit of a pain, though. Epic fixed this by opening up the area a bit via meteor strike. The prison is now about half the annoying loot cells and double the fun!
Here is a Twitter thread that shows each new location.
New skins, dances and graffiti
Along with the new season, Epic has released a handful of new skins, emotes and dances. Here is a detailed a breakdown of all of the new skins. From the looks of it, Carbide would be the owner of the hero mansion near Lonely Lodge and Omega, the hillside villain lair.
The new tag emotes are quite fun. They allow you to graffiti tag the ground or walls with spray paint. Tagging your building after a victory royale is a pretty cool look (I can tell you this based on the experience of having it done to me twice now).
Among the new dances are early favorites “Orange Justice” which was based on the viral trend “Orange shirt kid” and “Hype,” inspired by rapper Blocboy JB. Here are the newly introduced dances thus far:
What is coming next?
Epic has said that they will be updating regularly as they go through this season, perhaps making changes to the map in the process. This should come as no surprise, as it is what they have been doing every season.
What everyone really wants to know is what Epic is planning to do next, specifically with the two massive hints they’ve dropped early in Season 4. In the super-villain lair, you’ll notice the tip of a massive nuclear warhead peaking out over Snobby Shores. Fans are already speculating another massive map change on the way with the visual nuke clue being added. Could we be seeing a Fortnite meets Fallout 4 style season after this one?
Also, there is a house between Greasy Grove and Snobby Shores that has been destroyed by what looks like a giant footprint. Maybe we will see those dinosaurs after all!
If there is one thing we learned from Season 3, it’s that Epic will have us theorizing all kinds of crazy ideas over the next 60+ days until Season 5. Until then, sit back, relax, explore these new locations and start knocking off battle pass challenges because Omega (level 100) is a really cool looking skin.
