5 steps to help revitalize the Detroit Pistons

4. Hire Jerry Stackhouse

Stackhouse checked in at No. 5 on our list of available NBA head coaching candidates, but he should be the No. 1 choice for the Pistons. He’s familiar with the city from his playing career with the Pistons, but most importantly, he can relate to the team’s young talent.

Van Gundy was an excellent leader for a veteran team that was trying to make noise in the playoffs. Detroit has to accept that isn’t what they really are at the moment. Instead, they need to shift their focus towards player development. That will obviously require some personnel moves, but those need to be preceded by going young at the coaching position.

Stackhouse gives you the advantage of having a former player who’s already been a head coach in the G-League. The fact that he led the Raptors’ G-League franchise to back to back finals shows he has some coaching ability. It’s time for him to get a chance to duplicate that success in the NBA.
