DraftKings Main MLB Picks May 9: Should we use Corbin?

There are seven games in the main DraftKings tournament today. Wait, you say. There were only six in the early tournament, so what happened to the other two? Well, the early start for the Reds and Mets has that in showdown mode, and also in the return of the all day DraftKings tournament. It’s nice to have that back. We are still missing one game, right? Nope. The Twins and Cardinals are off today, which is rare to not have all 30 teams in action on a Wednesday. Three pitchers are priced as aces tonight. Which ones are worth it?

BOSTON, MA – APRIL 12: Rick Porcello #22 of the Boston Red Sox reacts after making the third out in the seventh inning of a game against the New York Yankees at Fenway Park on April 12, 2018 in Boston, Massachusetts. (Photo by Adam Glanzman/Getty Images) /

Top Tier:

Patrick Corbin ($13,300): Yes, I know that Corbin has bordered on great this year. He only gave up one run to this same Dodgers team on Thursday. However, lost in how good he has been is his nasty splits. Corbin has been dominant at home with a 1.32 ERA and 0.59 WHIP. Those numbers inflate to 4.50 and 1.25 on the road. That said, Corbin has faced the Dodgers twice already this year and allowed just one run to them in 13.1 innings. The bad news? Both of those games were in Chase Field.

Rick Porcello ($10,800): Yes, I have Porcello on here. Yes, I realize who he is pitching against. The Yankees are only hitting .204 against Porcello in 157. The Bombers do have seven homers, but a modest 14 runs. The downside is that Porcello only has 34 strikeouts in that span. Porcello has been outstanding this year with a 5-0 record, 2.14 ERA, 0.82 WHIP, and 46 strikeouts over 46.2 innings. Expect another quality start here, even against the Yankees.

Middle Tier:

Joey Lucchesi ($7,200): Lucchesi has had a good start to his career, posting a 3.13 ERA in his first seven starts. This will be a tougher test against the Nationals, but Lucchesi has a 3.08 ERA in five home starts and holds the platoon advantage against Harper and Matt Adams. Lucchesi is a solid bet to put up good numbers tonight.

Nick Pivetta ($6,900): I am aware that Pivetta has a bloated 4.77 ERA and 1.32 WHIP, but I am here to give you the good news: Pivetta has a 3.00 ERA and 1.04 WHIP in four home starts. The Giants have only scored two runs in the first two games of this series. There is very good potential for Pivetta here.

Bargain Pitchers:

Chris Stratton ($5,900): Before you go dismissing Stratton, let me give you a few things to chew on. I know that his ERA and WHIP are solid, but not great. I also know that he is playing in a hitter’s park. However, Stratton owns a 2.49 ERA and 0.87 WHIP in four road starts. Three of those starts were in pretty hitter friendly places in SunTrust Park, Chase Field, and Dodger Stadium. That makes his road numbers all the more impressive. Stratton could turn in a surprisingly good start here tonight.

Andrew Cashner ($5,700): Turnabout is fair play. Don’t be shocked if the Orioles hang a ten spot on Royals starter Eric Skoglund with his 6.84 ERA tonight. That makes Cashner a likely bet for a win. On top of that, the Royals are only hitting .208 against Cashner in 48 at bats with no homers, four runs, and nine strikeouts. Those numbers are pretty good for this price range.

CLEVELAND, OH – MAY 3: Josh Donaldson #20 of the Toronto Blue Jays tosses his bat after hitting a solo home run during the fourth inning against the Cleveland Indians in game two of a doubleheader at Progressive Field on May 3, 2018 in Cleveland, Ohio. (Photo by Jason Miller/Getty Images) /

Top Tier:

The Blue Jays didn’t record a hit. Don’t count on that happening again tonight with Wade LeBlanc on the mound. Josh Donaldson is 4-9 with two homers, three runs, and four RBI in his career against LeBlanc. Justin Smoak has only faced LeBlanc twice. He hit a home run both times! Russell Martin is 4-9 with a double, two walks, a run, and a RBI against LeBlanc. Stacking the Blue Jays corner infield could be a really good idea.

Freddie Freeman and Jose Bautista are definitely worth a look against what is going to amount to the Rays bullpen. If Ryan Yarbrough starts, I’m leaning more towards Bautista, but neither are bad options. Neither is Nick Markakis. He hits pitches no matter which hand they come from.

Middle Tier:

Hanley Ramirez is only 6-26(.231) against Masahiro Tanaka, but he has a walk, three homers, and four RBI off of him.

The Padres have actually hit Gio Gonzalez well, which is a little surprising considering who is still on their DL. Eric Hosmer is 5-7 with five walks, two homers, two steals, four runs, and four RBI in his career against Gio. Chase Headley is only 3-14, but he has two doubles, a homer, and three RBI off of Gio.

Do you trust Julio Teheran? I sure don’t. I would much rather use cheap Rays hitters against him. Wilson Ramos is 4-11 with a walk, two doubles, a homer, and two RBI against Teheran so far in his career.

I like Anthony Rendon with the platoon advantage against Joey Lucchesi. Ryan Zimmerman is worth a look too. The Nats do have some right handed power as well.

Paul Goldschmidt likely shouldn’t be this cheap. Goldy is 6-25(.240) with four walks, three homers, five runs, and six RBI in his career against Alex Wood.

Bargain Shoppers:

If Austin Barnes gets the start tonight, you want him in your lineup. Barnes is 2-6 in his career against Patrick Corbin. Both of those hits are home runs. If Yasmani Grandal starts instead, you can use him too. Grandal is 5-14 with a walk, a double, three runs, and a RBI off of Corbin.

DraftKings
BALTIMORE, MD – APRIL 22: Manny Machado #13 of the Baltimore Orioles hits a single in the sixth inning against the Cleveland Indians at Oriole Park at Camden Yards on April 22, 2018 in Baltimore, Maryland. (Photo by Patrick McDermott/Getty Images) /

Top Tier:

Manny Machado is almost a must own at home against a pedestrian lefty. Machado is averaging 1.3 more DraftKings points per game at home this year, and has five homers at Camden Yards in only 51 at bats.

Xander Bogaerts is only 7-32(.219) against Tanaka, but he has two walks, a double, a homer, four runs scored, and four RBI off of him in his career.

Trea Turner is worth a look with a lefty on the mound. His $4,700 price tag is also lower than usual. Howie Kendrick could be a solid play as well. That said, Lucchesi has pitched well in every game, so I’m not going to stack against him.

Middle Tier:

Jean Segura is 9-27 with two walks, two doubles, and four runs scored in his career against Jaime Garcia. There is decent value potential here.

If you don’t trust Chris Stratton’s road splits to keep this up, Cesar Hernandez is a strong play atop a Phillies lineup that has scored 14 runs in the first two games of this series. I’m not excited enough to stack against Stratton, but Hernandez is good enough to use as a standalone play.

Bargain Shoppers:

Freddy Galvis is looking like a great punt tonight. Galvis is 11-42(.262) with two walks, two doubles, two homers, a steal, five runs, and three RBI from his time with the Phillies against Gio Gonzalez.

Enrique Hernandez is worth a look any time that he faces a left handed pitcher.

HOUSTON, TX – MAY 02: Giancarlo Stanton #27 of the New York Yankees doubles in the eighth inning against the Houston Astros at Minute Maid Park on May 2, 2018 in Houston, Texas. (Photo by Bob Levey/Getty Images) /

Top Tier:

The Yankees have not hit Rick Porcello well, but they have hit him hard. Only Stanton and Brett Gardner are hitting over the Mendoza line against Porcello. Stanton has only faced him three times, registering a double and three RBI. Gardner is 14-49(.286) with three walks, three doubles, two homers, six steals, six runs, and a pair of RBI. Aaron Judge has a homer, but is hitting .154. Gregorius has two solo homers, but is hitting only .192 against Porcello. Aaron Hicks also has two homers off of Procello, but is hitting a miserable .148.

On the other hand, the Red Sox have hit Tanaka pretty well and very hard. J.D.Martinez is 7-12 with two doubles, three homers, and seven RBI against Tanaka already. Mookie Betts is8-33(.242) with two walks, three doubles, a homer, seven runs, and four RBI off of Tanaka.

Rhys Hoskins also looks good against Chris Stratton. As good as Stratton has been on the road, he still isn’t going to pitch a shutout. Hoskins is a good bet to drive in one or two.

Middle Tier:

I know that Adam Jones is struggling, but he is definitely worth playing in this price range against a pitcher like Skoglund. I like Mark Trumbo here as well. Trey Mancini could be worth a look as well.

Nelson Cruz is 1-3 with a two run homer in his career against Jaime Garcia. Mitch Haniger and Guillermo Heredia have never faced Garcia, but chances are they will like what they see as well.

Denard Span is 13-35(.371) with two walks, two doubles, two triples, a homer two steals, nine runs, and two RBI in his career against Julio Teheran. Carlos Gomez is 4-16 with two walks, a double, a triple, a run, and two RBI off of Teheran.

Steven Souza has been pretty quiet since coming off the DL. That could change tonight. He is 2-6 in his career against Alex Wood. Both hits are solo homers. A.J. Pollock is 9-21(.429) with three doubles, two homers, two steals, five runs, and three RBI in his career against Wood.

Bargain Shoppers:

If Abraham Almonte is in the lineup, he could be worth using. Almonte is 2-3 with two doubles and two RBI so far against Andrew Cashner.

Matt Kemp comes cheap, and he is 6-20 with two walks, four doubles, two runs, and four RBI against Patrick Corbin in his career.
