James Borrego inherits a difficult situation with the Hornets. Here are the first things on his to-do list.

There’s no doubt James Borrego is happy to get his first opportunity to be an NBA head coach, but the Hornets are a tough job. The former San Antonio assistant will have his work cut out for him to improve Michael Jordan’s beleaguered franchise.

Borrego will take over a team whose roster is largely what it’s going to be for the next several seasons. The Hornets already have over $117 million committed in salary for next season so they won’t be in a position to strengthen the roster through free agency. The Hornets’ managing partner, Curtis Polk, is right on the mark with his opinion that the next coach’s first responsibility is going to be player development.

The fact that Charlotte have an aging roster is going to make that a real challenge for Borrego. The Hornets have a few interesting young pieces like Malik Monk and Willy Hernangomez, but there doesn’t appear to be a future star on the roster. That means Borrego will also need to do everything he can to help the team’s old dogs learn some new tricks.

If Borrego wants to be a success in Charlotte he’s going to need to hit the ground running. The Hornets’ new coach needs to do these three things to give his new team an immediate boost. Michael Jordan and the rest of the Hornets front office will certainly hope Borrego is the right man to get them back into the Eastern Conference Playoffs next season.
