The Philadelphia 76ers avoided a sweep and will try to again extend the series against the Boston Celtics in Game 5.

With the Philadelphia 76ers’ season on the line, head coach Brett Brown turned to backup point guard T.J. McConnell in the starting lineup over the scuffling Robert Covington to save the day. The gambit worked, as McConnell scored a career-high 19 points to help the Sixers to a 103-92 Game 4 victory over the Boston Celtics.

Philadelphia outscored Boston by 18 points in McConnell’s 39 minutes of action, giving the gritty point guard a team-best plus-38 plus-minus in this series. In addition to his scoring outburst, McConnell played terrific defense against Terry Rozier, who had just 11 points on 4-of-11 shooting in a chippy Game 4 that featured four technical fouls.

McConnell is expected to get the starting nod again in Game 5, but the Sixers can’t count on another monster performance and will need their studs to be better. Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons both notched double-doubles in Game 4, but they combined to shoot 12-of-30 and committed six turnovers. On a more positive note, Dario Saric’s game-high 25 points were a sight for sore eyes after he struggled in the first three games of the series.

Nobody stood out for Boston in Game 4, though Jayson Tatum continues to impress with his scoring ability. By scoring 20 points on 7-of-16 shooting, the rookie made it six straight games with 20 points or more.

While the Celtics weren’t able to bust out the brooms, they should still be feeling confident heading back to Boston. The Celtics haven’t lost a home game yet in these playoffs, with Rozier especially performing at a high level at TD Garden. The young point guard is putting up 22.8 points per game on 50.5 percent shooting in six postseason home games.

Boston may be without backup point guard Shane Larkin for Game 5. Larkin injured his shoulder after running into Embiid in the first half of Game 4 and didn’t return.

The Celtics will almost certainly put forth a better effort back on their home floor for Game 5, so the Sixers will have to be better themselves in order to get this series back to Philly. The Sixers are due for a complete team performance, but winning in Boston is a tall order these days.
