2018 NBA Mock Draft: What if Memphis wins the lottery?
Can we learn anything about Shamet from Fred VanVleet’s NBA career? While the Shockers have completely changed direction from a defensive juggernaut to an explosive offense, both came out of college as efficient, low-usage players who won a lot in the NCAA. In the NBA, VanVleet has been effective by playing that strong defense he learned at school and continuing to be an efficient ball-handler against NBA defenses.
Really, VanVleet isn’t particularly special outside of being a great shooter and individual defender. He rarely turns the ball over, makes smart decisions and creates offense for himself in a pinch. But he’s not an explosive athlete or dominant finisher, nor is he big enough to switch onto big men defensively and hold his own. VanVleet just does his job, and it could lead to a 6th Man of the Year award as well as a fat payday this summer.
Shamet could be similar. He carried a low usage rate through three seasons at Wichita State, but watching the team he was clearly its best playmaker. Shamet simply knew how to get the offense in rhythm and when it needed him to make shots. That feel isn’t easily taught, and it will help him turn every bench unit he’s part of his rookie season look more playable than one ever imagined possible.
The Pacers need a long-term option at the other guard spot opposite Victor Oladipo, and Shamet is a great fit.
