4. Jerry Stackhouse

Stackhouse is another internal candidate of sorts, as the head coach of Toronto’s D/G-League team, the Raptors 905, for the last two seasons. He won D-League Coach of the Year in 2017, as the team won the league title too.

Stackhouse also served as an assistant under Casey for one season (2015-16), and he has been easily mentioned as a candidate for head coaching openings in this year’s carousel. With Stan Van Gundy gone as Detroit Pistons coach, a return to a team he played for could now be on the table for Stackhouse.

As a former player, Stackhouse may carry some extra credibility in a locker room. He also had current young Raptors’ forward Pascal Siakam on that title-winning D-League team in 2017, with the 2016 first-round pick winning Finals MVP. Being a head coach at a lower level, even as briefly as he has, seems sure to give Stackhouse a keen eye on and for player development.

Even as a first-time NBA head coach, with a fairly short coaching resume overall, there is some competition building for Stackhouse’s services. Any attachment he feels to the organization, which let him get his start in coaching, could give the Raptors an edge.
