2018 IndyCar Grand Prix results: Will Power wins
The IndyCar Grand Prix went to Will Power for the third time and earned him a Team Penske milestone. Here are the full 2018 IndyCar Grand Prix results.
The Verizon IndyCar Series returned to Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Saturday for its annual road course race, and the 2018 IndyCar Grand Prix was an entertaining start to the Month of May.
The race continued its tradition of first-lap problems, as Simon Pagenaud was bumped from behind by Jordan King and that sent both spinning off-track, while King’s teammate Spencer Pigot went over a chicane and then slid off as well, forcing Takuma Sato to mow the lawn to get around him.
All four cars were able to get back on track, athough Pigot was penalized for avoidable contact and dropped to 23rd place.
The IndyCar Grand Prix settled down after that with polesitter Will Power and second-place starter Robert Wickens making it largely a two-car battle through the first half of the afternoon. But when Power’s teammate Josef Newgarden spun on Lap 56 of 85, that closed up the ranks and changed up the order.
Power just barely beat Wickens off pit lane and was able to stay ahead of him on the restart, and Scott Dixon was able to interject himself between the two. Both Power and Dixon were able to save fuel as it became an issue for most of the field, giving Power his third IndyCar Grand Prix victory in four tries.
It was also his first race win of the 2018 IndyCar season, and tying him for the most IndyCar wins in Team Penske history. It was also Penske’s 200th IndyCar victory. “I’ve never driven so hard for an entire race,” Power told TV reporters in Victory Lane as he celebrated a significant day all the way around.
