The Vegas Golden Knights try to even their series with the Winnipeg Jets in Game 2 and here’s everything you need to know about the contest.

Before Game 1 of this Western Conference Final series between the Vegas Golden Knights and the Winnipeg Jets, we talked about a few key players. For the Jets, they were going to need Mark Scheifele to keep a hot hand. They’d also need Patrik Laine to start putting pucks into the net.

This matchup was going to be a stern test for Vegas goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury as well. He’s been a dream between the pipes with four shutouts and came into Round 3 with a 1.57 goals against average. But he hadn’t quite faced an offense this staggering. Winnipeg doesn’t stop coming and, for one game at least, we found out who had the upper hand.

Scheifele scored again and added an assist to give him 12 goals and 18 points through 13 games. Keep the hot hand? Check. Laine also found the goal column for the first time since Game 4 against the Nashville Predators, and Blake Wheeler added three assists. Find your depth scoring? Check and check again. The Jets took care of Vegas in Game 1 by a 4-2 score, but we have a feeling this one is going for the long haul. Don’t be surprised to find us in an eventual Game 7.

For Fleury, he didn’t have his best effort. He gave up a few soft goals and allowed the four on only 26 shots. So he has to come ready on Monday night if his team is to have a shot at evening this series. Really, Fleury has to be the best player on the ice for the Golden Knights not only tonight but likely for the entire stretch run. Up until, Game 1 he had been exactly that, so we don’t doubt he’ll bounce back in Game 2.

Vegas also has to produce more than 21 shots on opposing netminder Connor Hellebuyck. It made it far too easy on the Vezina candidate. Though Jonathan Marchessault had himself another solid performance with two assists, the Golden Knights need to be able to match the depth on the other side. Look for some changes to be made going into this one.

Players to watch

Vegas: Jonathan Marchessault. He had four goals against the San Jose Sharks in its previous series, and the Golden Knights will need more of that production to keep pace with the Winnipeg offense. He’s off to a good start with the two assists in Game 1, but they’ll need him to hit the net on his own as well. If Fleury can stand on his head as he’s proven throughout, Marchessault and William Karlsson could help take this series over for Vegas. It will need more along the way, but the big guns have to be just that tonight.

Winnipeg: As long as Mark Scheifele continues to score goals, he’s going to be a player to watch. He leads everyone now with 12 and leads all who remain in these playoffs with 18 points, three behind Jake Guentzel of the eliminated Pittsburgh Penguins. It’s getting pretty fun now to see what he’s going to do each night. We could also wager that with his performance on Saturday, he’s jumped ahead of Fleury as a Conn Smythe favorite. It will take plenty more to keep that spot, but the race is interesting. If nobody knew who Scheifele was before these playoffs began, they’re learning now.
