2. Noah Hanifin

This would be a major move for the Carolina organization. Noah Hanifin is one of the young star defensemen in the NHL, and a move for him would need to be a major one. He is a restricted free agent this summer, so this could be Carolina’s one chance to move him for a long time. The team’s leadership would need to at least entertain offers for Hanifin because they will be astronomical. He has already played three seasons but is only 21 years old. He has gotten better every season offensively topping 30 points for the first time this season. A team just getting started with a rebuild could jump-start the process by adding Hanifin. The former fifth overall pick will define someone’s franchise for many years to come but it will not be the Hurricanes.

The Arizona Coyotes would be a fit for Hanifin. It is likely that Oliver Ekman-Larsson will be on his way out of the desert when he is a free agent, so Hanifin would be a good replacement. The Coyotes have been bad for too long. John Chayka needs to finally step up and make moves to start winning games. Hanifin and Jakob Chychurn would give the Coyotes organization two solid pillars to build around on defense. In terms of what Carolina would receive, Max Domi could be a target. He is a little bit of a pest but plays fast and is starting to find his offensive game. He is someone the fans in Carolina would fall in love with. Domi will not carry an offense but would be a nice complementary piece to have as the roster is turned over.
