1. Sonny Gray

Gray’s inclusion on his list won’t surprise any Yankee fans. He’s been the team’s weakest starting pitcher on the year by a wide margin. The fact that he’s the team’s most maligned pitcher since Carl Pavano also doesn’t help his chances of staying on the team.

With all that being said, Gray’s Yankees career isn’t hopeless. When you watch him pitch it’s clear he has the stuff to be an above average Major League pitcher. His issues on the mound are much more mental than physical.

Strangely, Gray’s struggles this season could keep him in pinstripes because Cashman won’t want to give him away for nothing in a trade. If his performance totally bottoms out, his stock might be too low to recoup anything of value. That might lead the team to want to rehabilitate him rather than deal him.

Ultimately, Cashman and company understand that pitching is going to be what makes or breaks this team when October arrives. Gray will either need to shape up or ship out. Unfortunately for the former Vanderbilt star, the odds favor the latter outcome. Gray’s days in New York could be numbered.
