The Packers have plenty of offensive weapons. They should ignore Jason Witten’s advice about signing former Cowboy Dez Bryant.

Jason Witten’s new job with Monday Night Football will require him to espouse a wide variety of football opinions over the next year. That doesn’t mean NFL teams should take his advice. In fact, the Packers should certainly ignore his suggestion to sign former teammate Dez Bryant.

Witten believes that Bryant would be a great fit in Green Bay due to his ability to “high point” the football. The former Cowboys tight end correctly points out that Aaron Rodgers is one of the best back shoulder passers in football. Unfortunately for Bryant, that doesn’t make him a valuable addition for the Packers offense.

A quick examination of the Packers depth chart makes it pretty apparent there isn’t a home for Bryant in Green Bay. Randall Cobb and Davante Adams are firmly entrenched as the team’s starting wide receivers. Replacing Jordy Nelson is a concern for the team, but Bryant doesn’t have the speed to fill that void for Rodgers and company.

Adding Bryant to the team’s receiving corps as a backup isn’t a realistic option either. Bryant is determined to take a one-year deal so he can hit the market again next season. He’s going to be looking for a place that will get him the ball on a regular basis. Green Bay does a good job spreading the ball around to different receivers but Bryant isn’t going to be content as a third or fourth option.

Bryant’s best potential fit for a team is to serve as a jumbo target in the slot. The Packers already made a splashy acquisition to fill that role this summer. Jimmy Graham is a better version of what Bryant hopes to be this season. He may be listed as a tight end, but he’ll line up in the slot more often than not for Rodgers. It will be Graham’s job to make catches in traffic. He also has the ability to “high point” the football for big touchdown grabs.

Next: Cowboys taking shots at Dez Bryant is a bad look

Dez Bryant is still good enough to help several NFL teams. Jason Witten is right about that point. He just got the potential landing spot for his old running mate wrong. Bryant simply can’t help the Packers offense.
