With the Cubs reportedly making Manny Machado their top priority trade target, they should be sure to consider the reasons why the trade doesn’t make sense.

Manny Machado is having an incredible season so far this year.  He’s hitting .339 with 14 home runs and an OPS north of 1.000. Being in the last year of his contract, and the Orioles not being in contention this year, he is a prime trade target for contenders, especially those with hopes of signing him this offseason.

Once Corey Seager went down for the season, there were a lot of connections between Machado and the Dodgers. While they will be a major player for Machado, they have yet to demonstrate as much interest as the Cubs. However, the Cubs must consider what impact Machado will truly have. Here are five reasons why they shouldn’t trade for him.

5. No guarantee he re-signs

Machado, along with Bryce Harper, will be one of the most coveted free agents this upcoming offseason. So, if the Cubs trade for him, they may be interested in resigning him, especially if they part with Addison Russell. So, with the interest in resigning him, how much would the Cubs be ready to offer.

The Cubs have three more years of Jon Lester’s expensive deal, an uptick on Anthony Rizzo’s deal, and three more years of the most expensive arbitration player ever in Kris Bryant coming. That doesn’t even count the deal they just signed with Yu Darvish or Jason Heyward’s contracts. They already have these expensive deals. So, this raises questions about how much they would be willing to pay Machado. If they don’t offer him an extraordinary amount, it would drastically hurt their chances of re-signing.

So, trading for Machado will likely result in a big question mark at shortstop for next season.
