4. He will be an expensive rental

Let there be no doubt, there will be a bidding for for Machado’s services. Whether the public sees it or not, the Orioles’ front office will be continually fielding calls about Machado. This will only drive the price for him up.

Theo Epstein hasn’t been afraid of making a big splash at the trade deadline. Especially if it means parting with a lot of pieces, just ask the Yankees about the Aroldis Chapman trade. Speaking of the Yankees, they may be one of the teams Epstein has to outbid. With a farm system full of players they can trade, and preparation to sign a big free agent next year, the Yankees could make a huge offer to get Machado, then re-sign him.

Along with the Yankees come the Los Angeles Dodgers. While they are struggling right now, they will likely do everything they can to turn their season around. If that means Machado, they’re ready to go out and get a difference maker. After years of not being able to complete the puzzle in the playoffs, the Dodgers want to win. So, a desperate Dodgers team could drive up the price.

The Cubs will have to be prepared to hand over a kings ransom to get Machado for the second half of the season.
