1. Los Angeles Dodgers

During their run of five consecutive NL West titles, the Los Angeles Dodgers have been reluctant to make the “big” deal at the trade deadline to push their team over the top. President Andrew Friedman has begun changing his tune over the past two seasons as he continues to work his way out of the financial hellscape he inherited from the previous front office. Rich Hill and Josh Reddick came over at the deadline line in 2016, while Yu Darvish was a rental last year.

Those were moves made to push a team well on its way to the playoffs over the top. This year, the Dodgers need an even bigger bump just to move back into playoff contention. The title defense of last year’s NL pennant has not gotten off to a great start as Los Angeles sits well below .500 and buried in a tough division.

Until Manny Machado is traded to another team, the Dodgers have to be considered the favorites to acquire him. He is the only logical replacement for injured All-Star Corey Seager. Enrique Hernandez and Chris Taylor just aren’t going to cut it if the Dodgers are going to get back into a serious position to contend. Of course, the possibility does remain that things could fail to improve much, leading the front office to punt on the season.

The Dodgers certainly have the prospects in place to entertain the Orioles. Outfielder Alex Verdugo is exactly the type of MLB-ready hitter that Baltimore could use. Throw in a more speculative, lower-level arm or two, and a deal could come together fairly quickly.
