2. Mike Moustakas

The Royals third baseman would offer a clear upgrade over Farmer at third. The fact that he’s going to be a free agent this summer would also work in the Dodgers favor.

Firstly, it would greatly reduce the compensation Kansas City would expect in a trade. Any prospect with upside should be enough to satisfy the Royals. They know Moustakas isn’t coming back next year. Anything they can get for him in a trade is a plus.

More importantly for the Dodgers, they can rent him for the rest of the season and then make a long-term decision about him this summer. They’d get an up close and personal look at his skills before making a significant investment in his future. That’s a great benefit for a club who wants to contend and keep a manageable payroll.

In terms of this season, Moustakas would instantly become a big bat in the middle of the Dodgers order. He’s hitting just a shade under .300 this year, but more importantly, he already has 10 home runs. That’s three more than any Dodger has to date.

Moustakas isn’t the sexiest third base option available, but he’s the best option for the Dodgers. Keep an eye on this one moving forward.
