3. Neymar, forward, Brazil
Being at or at least close to peak fitness will be the priority for Neymar before Brazil’s first Group E match against Switzerland on Sunday, June 17. Brazil’s attacking talisman has been laid low by a foot injury since February.
How he recovers is understandably weighing heavily on the mind of the gifted 26-year-old. Neymar told TV Globo (h/t Sky Sports):
"Nobody is as scared as me. I know that people are a little anxious, but nobody more than me, nobody is as nervous about my comeback and nobody is more scared than me. It’s a very difficult time, right? I think it’s one of the most difficult I’ve ever had, because I’m very close to a dream I have, which is the World Cup."
Neymar’s trepidation is likely to be shared by national team boss Tite. He will know how important his ultra-talented No. 10 is to the Selecao’s chances of lifting the trophy.
Neymar won’t just be Brazil’s main goal threat. He’ll also be the chief creative influence in Tite’s squad.
His ability to drop off the front and release runners with quick and intuitive passes will be vital. Wingers such as Costa and Willian, as well as forwards Firmino and Jesus, will come to rely on Neymar’s ability to provide.
