Ryan Sessegnon

Liverpool have been heavily linked with a move for 18-year-old left-back-cum-winger, Ryan Sessegnon. The Fulham starlet excelled in the Championship this season where he scored 15 goals to help the club to the promotion playoffs. His form with the Cottagers earned him an unprecedented five EFL awards, including the league’s Young Player of the Season and Player of the Season awards, and has drawn suitors from across the globe.

Andrew Robertson and Sadio Mane have excelled at left-back and left-wing respectively for Liverpool this season but the club should persist in their pursuit of Sessegnon regardless. He is young enough to be used in a rotational role with Mane or Robertson and good enough to perform consistently when called up. Liverpool would be able to provide him the perfect platform to develop in the world class player he promises to be.

Sessegnon possesses a raw natural talent and energy that would see him contribute towards Liverpool’s already potent attack. And while he is not without flaws, particularly in respect of some of the defensive aspects of his game, he is a more viable option, both in the long and short-term, than Alberto Moreno. Moreno is another who has improved immensely this season but Sessegnon simply has a far higher ceiling.

Whether Liverpool could sign Sessegnon remains to be seen, though. The England youth international previously stated that he would not leave Fulham if they secured promotion to the Premier League. With the club in the playoff finals, it is possible that Liverpool may have to wait another season before making their move. Or maybe not — after all, money talks.
