Timo Werner

Liverpool are at their weakest in attack. At first glance it is the most bizarre statement to make given the record-breaking exploits of Mane, Firmino and Salah this season but in the context of squad depth it is an accurate deduction. The trailblazing trio form arguably the best attacking combination in the world but Liverpool are short on change beyond them.

Danny Ings is adored by the Anfield faithful but is yet to show that he is up to task following his recovery from serious injury and Daniel Sturridge and Divock Origi’s Liverpool careers seems to be all but over. The talented pair of Ben Woodburn and Dominic Solanke have more to offer but are still raw and unrefined.

Liverpool are thus in need of a forward who is capable not only of filling in in the absence of the “Fab Three” but competing with them for a starting berth. Few such players exist but RB Leipzig’s Timo Werner is one of them. The 22-year-old boasts over 150 Bundesliga appearance, with an impressive goal record to boot, and will lead Germany’ attack at the upcoming World Cup.

A prolific center forward, who was also the top goalscorer at last year’s Confederations Cup, Werner would be a quality addition to Liverpool’s front line. His direct and physical approach would give Liverpool another option in attack all the while consistently contributing to most important commodity of all: goals. Leipzig will be reluctant to sell another star player to Liverpool but a club-record deal may be enough to sign the German hitman.
