DraftKings Main MLB Picks May 24: Pitching is strong tonight

The eight games are evenly split today with four afternoon games and four night games. This will focus on the four late games. The pitching here is better than earlier in the day. All that will do is make the all day tournament very interesting.

HOUSTON, TX – MAY 12: Charlie Morton #50 of the Houston Astros pitches in the first inning against the Texas Rangers at Minute Maid Park on May 12, 2018 in Houston, Texas. (Photo by Bob Levey/Getty Images) /

Top Tier:

Charlie Morton ($11,400): The Indians have slugged four homers off of Morton in 77 at bats, but they are only hitting .208 with six runs. The 17 strikeouts for Morton are the game changer tonight. Morton has the best strikeout upside of anyone on the slate. It doesn’t hurt that Morton is 6-0 with a 1.94 ERA on the season. Very few are dominating the way Morton is right now.

Rick Porcello ($11,200): Forget the rocky past for Porcello against the Rays. Porcello has a 2-0 record with a 3.10 ERA and 0.98 WHIP against the Rays in three starts this year. The 20.6 DraftKings points average against Tampa means that we pretty much know what to expect here. Will he outscore Morton? Doubtful, but Porcello could be a decent option at lower ownership.

Middle Tier:

Mike Clevinger ($9,000): The Astros are hitting a strong .293 against Clevinger, but he has only given up one homer and three runs to them in 41 at bats. There isn’t much upside to using Clevinger against Morton, however, Clevinger could duel with Morton in this one. He also has 14 strikeouts in those 41 at bats. There is decent upside here.

Blake Snell ($8,000): Using a left handed starter against Boston is usually a recipe for disaster. Even Snell’s past stats show this. However, Snell has only allowed two runs to Boston in 13 innings this season while striking out 11. That has earned him 44.6 DraftKings points in the two starts against Boston. Snell has a stellar 1.07 ERA in four home starts. This is the place to use him!

Bargain Pitchers:

Zach Davies ($6,100): The Mets are only hitting .205 with a homer and four runs in 39 strikeouts. What makes this so impressive is this includes the stats that the Mets put up on Davies when they shelled him earlier this year. Of course, Cespedes was a big part of that one, and he is on the DL now. There is more risk with Davies than with any other pitcher on the slate thanks to the beating the Mets laid on him in New York back on April 13th. The fact that this is his first start off the DL doesn’t help either.

Steven Matz ($5,100): This is the only time so far this season that I can justify using every single pitcher on a slate. The good part about this is the parity among starting pitchers, which also creates a lot of parity in our lineups, which is rare in four game slates. The Brewers are only hitting .214 against Matz in 42 at bats with only one homer and four runs to go with ten strikeouts. Yes, there is potential here. Now the bad news: The Brewers bludgeoned Godley yesterday, someone who had been pitching pretty well.

Danny Duffy ($4,300): Words cannot explain just how bad Danny Duffy has been this year. Hell, the stats barely can. Duffy has been bombarded for 14 runs in his last two starts alone! That ERA has ballooned to 6.88 with a 1.73 WHIP. However, the strikeouts are still there, and Duffy gets to face a Texas team that is missing right handed masher Adrian Beltre. The healthy Rangers are only hitting .213 in 47 at bats against Duffy with one homer and five runs to go with seven strikeouts. There is enough potential to take the risk at this price.

Austin Bibens-Dirkx ($4,000): ABD was a serviceable fill in in the Texas rotation last year. He will get his chance to do the game this year. Bibens-Dirkx couldn’t ask for a much better place to make his 2018 debut. The Royals aren’t a very potent offense most of the time. There is solid potential at the minimum price, but don’t expect more than low teens for DraftKings points.

HOUSTON, TX – MAY 12: Ronald Guzman #67 of the Texas Rangers hits a home run in the third inning against the Houston Astros at Minute Maid Park on May 12, 2018 in Houston, Texas. (Photo by Bob Levey/Getty Images) /

Texas Rangers vs. Danny Duffy:

Yeah, Duffy makes it on here in two areas. It’s a short slate. Sue me. The options are limited. However, Duffy has been blasted time and time again. He only has one quality start on the season, and has only allowed fewer that four runs in three of his nine starts. Texas racked up 12 runs on the Yankees and that formidable staff last night with lefty CC Sabathia taking the mound. They may do the same to Duffy. Surprisingly, Rougned Odor has the only homer against Duffy so far. Jurickson Profar, Delino DeShields, and Ronald Guzman all had good nights last night. Nomar Mazara and Isiah Kiner-Falefa are worth a look as well.

Milwaukee Brewers vs. Steven Matz:

Yes, duplicity again. Hernan Perez has the only Brewers home run against Steven Matz so far, but with all of the right handed power on this team, Domingo Santana and Jesus Aguilar are with a look for the power potential. Lorenzo Cain is a favorite as well batting near the top of this lineup. If everyone else is succeeding, then leadoff hitter Jonathan Villar should as well, right?

New York Mess vs. Zach Davies:

The Mets clobbered Davies for five runs in 4.1 innings in April. Cespedes and Bruce both homered in that game. The Mets offense has been mostly a black hole lately. Even Conforto is struggling. Asdrubal Cabrera and Bruce are definitely in play. Conforto may be as well. After that, it gets pretty dicey.

HOUSTON, TX – MAY 23: George Springer #4 of the Houston Astros hits a two-run home run in the fifth inning against the San Francisco Giants at Minute Maid Park on May 23, 2018 in Houston, Texas. (Photo by Bob Levey/Getty Images) /

Top Tier:

I’m not a huge fan of paying six large for any hitter, but wow, is Mookie on a tear! Betts is hitting .390 with three homers, six steals, and eight RBI over the last ten games. He may just be worth this price yet again. He is also 4-15 with a homer, a steal, and five RBI against Blake Snell.

It should come as no surprise that George Springer is the only Astro to hit a home run off of Mike Clevinger so far. It should also come as no surprise that I’m not really interested in any other Astros here either.

Middle Tier:

Edwin Encarnacion is 3-6 with two homers and three RBI in his career against Charlie Morton. I find it hard to use anyone against Morton right now, but Edwin is there if you want him.

I don’t know that it’s worth stacking Royals. That offense just isn’t good enough. However, it isn’t totally an offensive black hole. Salvador Perez, Whit Merrifield, and Jorge Soler could be worth looks to fill out your lineup.

Bargain Shoppers:

Do we really trust Brad Miller to do anything with a bat in his hands anymore? If you do, Miller is 13-46(.283) with two walks, six doubles, five homers, nine runs, and 11 RBI in his career against Rick Porcello. Denard Span is the safer pick. Span is 17-46(.370) with two walks, a homer, a steal, three runs, and seven RBI against Porcello.
