5 players Juventus should sign this summer
Juventus may have won the double this past season, but it doesn’t mean they shouldn’t get stronger. Here are five players they should target this summer.
Juventus captured the double this season, part of a dynasty that includes seven straight Serie A titles. While this is a team loaded with talent with no strong domestic contenders, it doesn’t mean Juve won’t want to bring in more talent and reinforcements this summer.
Indeed, the Old Lady is just that. The team’s 25-player roster was an average age of 30. Out of that group, just five players were under 25. This is a team that’s older than most top European squads. While veterans have served them well, it also means the Bianconeri are a team that will need to get younger if manager Massimiliano Allegri hopes to add more silverware to his trophy collection during the 2018-19 campaign.
Juventus are also a team still trying to win the Champions League in the current era. In order to do so, they will need depth across the roster, particularly in midfield and attack. The departure of the legendary Gianluigi Buffon means the starting goalkeeper position is up for grabs. This is something that can certainly dominate the summer transfer season should an opportunity to sign a big name come up.
Also, for a team that has had a great defense, this past season showed some vulnerabilities. Bringing in some new blood could bolster the backline, while added elements in midfield and attack would certainly help a team that play many matches across several high-level competitions.
Here are five players Juventus should buy during this summer’s transfer period.
Gianluigi Donnarumma (AC Milan)
Let’s start in goal. After Buffon’s departure, Juventus may want to look at another Gianluigi to guard their goal. While Poland international Wojciech Szczesny is now the likely starter, it doesn’t mean the Bianconeri should give up on trying to sign one of Italy’s top keepers.
Donnarumma did not have a great season at AC Milan, but would be better served if he had a better backline in front of him. The 19-year-old Donnarumma is already considered Buffon’s heir for Italy. There’s no reason he can’t follow in those same footsteps at Juve. After last summer’s contract dispute involving his agent Mino Raiola, it’s really anyone’s guess what will happen in the coming months.
Despite signing him to a four-year deal last summer, AC Milan have already said they will allow Donnarumma to explore a move. Several big clubs have showed some interest, a group currently headed by Liverpool. Real Madrid and Manchester United are also said to be in that group. Donnarumma would have likely stayed with the Rossoneri had the team finished in the top four and earned a spot in the Champions League. Instead, they finished sixth and only qualified for the Europa League.
