Is Saturday Night Live new tonight, May 26?

Saturday Night Live season 43 has been a series of ups and downs, with extended breaks in the middle and right before the end. Is there more in store?

Last week’s episode of Saturday Night Live was a proverbial smorgasbord of celebrity cameos, memetic references and nods to other pieces of pop culture. For some reason, one of the most prolific writers of the show’s history, Tina Fey, was content to open up her monologue with a question and answer gag, relying on star power to carry the comedy.

It continued a disappointing trend of former SNL cast members returning to 30 Rock and having to do their best to buoy subpar writing, only to flounder. Bill Hader’s episode was fairly rigid and Will Ferrell got barely anything good to work with, leaving John Mulaney (someone who was never in front of the camera) as the only returnee to come out unscathed.

Thankfully, none of the star players closing out their sixth or seventh seasons on Saturday Night Live gave off the vibe that this would be their last season. We’re starting to see featured players like Alex Moffat, Mikey Day, Chris Redd and Heidi Gardner take big steps forward in SNL season 43, but they’ll probably need at least one more season before they take over the direction of the new era.

Saturday Night Live season 43 may be one of the most unimaginative, creatively stagnant seasons in the show’s recent history, propped up primarily by its biting Weekend Update segment. Alec Baldwin’s Donald Trump has been resting on its celebrity, while Michael Che and Colin Jost dig in and make people feel uncomfortable. Hopefully, we see political sketches with something to say going into 2018-2019.

With Tina Fey’s episode on May 19, she brought Saturday Night Live season 43 to a close, meaning we will not see any more episodes for a few months. With any luck, we will get a Weekend Update: Summer Edition miniseries as midterm season picks up, but we’ll have to see what NBC has to say about that in the months ahead.
