Cardinals at Pirates

Cardinals Probable Starter – Miles Mikolas, RHP

2.24 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 19.4 strikeout rate

Vs LHH – .274 average, .304 wOBA, 28.2 fly ball rate and 40.0 hard contact rate

Vs RHH – .181 average, .212 wOBA, 18.2 fly ball rate and 29.5 hard contact rate

I absolutely think Mikolas is going to have a very solid game in Pittsburgh today. Here’s the issue I have in playing him: He’s $9,300. At that price, there’s no room for value with his strikeout rate. Pittsburgh has one of the lowest strikeout rates in baseball on top of that. Unless he’s going to strikeout a few more batters than would be normal, you can’t get 32-37 FanDuel points for $9,300. With all of the good pitching options on the slate, that would be a disaster. I’m not playing a single Pirate against the control and fly ball rate of Mikolas today.

Pirates hitters to Target

Elite Options – None

Secondary Options – None

Pirates Probable Starter – Jameson Taillon, RHP

4.56 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 21.9 strikeout rate

Vs LHH – .268 average, .346 wOBA, 29.7 fly ball rate and 29.9 hard contact rate

Vs RHH – .233 average, .270 wOBA, 34.7 fly ball rate and 26.7 hard contact rate

I certainly won’t be playing Taillon given his current form. He hasn’t exceeded 28 points in almost two months (!) so he’s very risky. St. Louis is right around the middle of the league in strikeout rate so there’s not a lot of upside there. Matt Carpenter is a standout here because he’s lefty and has really started to heat up. He’s still just $3,300. Taillon is better against righty hitters and the Cards are very righty heavy. Carpenter is the best one-off and a Cardinals stack could potentially pay off in a big way.

Cardinals Hitters to Target

Elite Options – Matt Carpenter

Secondary Options – Jose Martinez, Tommy Pham, Marcell Ozuna

Home Run Pick – Matt Carpenter goes back to back
