The Lucifer bonus episodes continue with “Once Upon a Time.” It’s a family affair as we meet another member of Lucifer’s family for the first time.

After three seasons of Lucifer, this bottle episode of the show that was meant for season 4 features something fans have never experienced until now: Lucifer’s father. That’s right, the second unaired episode of Lucifer will introduce Neil Gaiman as the voice of God.

Here’s the official synopsis of Lucifer “Once Upon a Time”:

"An alternate dimension is visited where Lucifer has never met Chloe but is granted the freedom of choice."

Until now, everything Lucifer has done seems to be the byproduct of Lucifer’s father. Lucifer firmly believes that everything in his life has been orchestrated by God, and he can’t change his fate. In “Once Upon a Time,” Lucifer gets a taste of free will.

This standalone episodes examines what life would be like if Lucifer could make his own decisions in a world where Chloe isn’t in his life. Would things be any different for him? Would his life be better off, or worse? As will be the case with the other bonus episode, “Boo Normal,” it’s not clear how much of the season 3 finale will play into this episode. It’s unclear whether we’re looking at whether or not having Chloe in Lucifer’s life is based on her knowing the truth about who he is. That could really play into the final answer.

Neil Gaiman guest stars as Lucifer’s father, God. It’s highly appropriate considering that Lucifer Morningstar of the comics canon is part of Gaiman’s Sandman universe. Though the television version of Lucifer Morningstar is very different than his comic book familiar, having Gaiman along for the ride is fitting enough. It’s even more fitting that Gaiman appears in this final episode of Lucifer to be aired on FOX.
