Here is how the middleweight fight between Eric Spicely and Darren Stewart played out at UFC Liverpool.

On May 27th the UFC held UFC Liverpool at the Echo Arena. Eric Spicely and Darren Stewart opened the main card in a middleweight fight.

Spicely came into the UFC undefeated and participated in The Ultimate Fighter 23. Even though Spicely did not win the show he did enough to earn a fight at UFC Fight Night 91 against Sam Alvey.

After losing his promotional debut by guillotine, Spicely won two in a row by first round submission. He then lost two in a row. Spicely’s most recent loss was a TKO to Gerald Meerschaert due to a liver kick.

Spicely entered the fight with 2-3 record the UFC and this fight is his last on his current contract. He moved his camp to Tristar Gym and knows that a loss may mean he is cut and searching for a new job.

Stewart was also in need of a win after coming into the UFC undefeated. He won his first fight against Francimar Barroso by TKO in Brazil, but the Brazilian commission changed the outcome to a no-contest due to an accidental headbutt.

In a rematch, Barroso won by unanimous decision. Stewart dropped to middleweight and lost his next two fights by submission. If this fight card was not in Stewart’s hometown, he may have already been cut by the UFC.

Round 1

The round started and both fighters met in the center of the Octagon. They exchanged strikes and Spicely landed and heavy right hand. Spicely, the BJJ black belt, used that opportunity to shoot for a single leg. He pressed Stewart against the cage but was unable to secure the takedown.

Stewart defended the takedown and worked himself off the cage. The fight returned to the center of the Octagon.

Stewart was able to keep Spicely at a distance using his jab and prevent another takedown attempt. Spicely countered with a couple hard leg kicks. FanSided scored it 10-9 Spicely.

Round 2

Stewart spends the first-minute throwing jabs and straight rights. He then lands a heavy right hand and Spicely was wobbled.

He appeared to get his legs under him briefly but then walked into another stiff jab.

Spicely went down and Stewart swarmed him. Spicely attempted to use a knee shield to keep Stewart away but punches started getting through. Spicely was overwhelmed, covered up and was unable to defend himself.

Official Scorecard: Darren Stewart def. Eric Spicely via TKO (strikes). Round 2, 1:47.
