30 best jerseys in college football
29. Iowa (Black)
Another classic uniform in college football belongs to the Iowa Hawkeyes. There’s just something about black and gold on a uniform that makes it look spectacular. Yes, the Hawkeyes’ jerseys may be simple, but they’re incredibly sleek. Even though the two teams play at different levels, many people immediately think of the Pittsburgh Steelers when looking at the Iowa jerseys. Despite the comparison, few know the relationship between the two teams.
In light of the winning culture surrounding the Steelers in the 1970’s, first-year Iowa head coach Hayden Fry reached out to the team in 1979. Uniquely, he asked the franchise if they would design Iowa’s uniforms to replicate their own. His thought process? In order to win, the team had to dress like winners. That mindset is worthy of throwing the uniform on the list on its own. Not to mention, he succeeded in making the Iowa Hawkeyes winners. Of course, the Steelers loved the idea. For this reason, the uniforms on each team are nearly identical. However, there are a few distinguishable differences in the two teams’ black and gold. Most notably the Tiger Hawk on Iowa’s chests.
The Hawkeyes are one of two college football franchises to emulate a professional team with its uniforms, with the other being the Duke Blue Devils (Indianapolis Colts). In addition to their black uniforms, Iowa’s white uniforms are also incredibly similar to those of the Steelers. However, it’s the black and gold that takes the cake and makes this list. While it’s true Iowa has some pretty stunning uniforms, Iowa State has had some over the years as well. Unfortunately (to Cyclones fans), their school’s uniforms were unable to make this list due to the offseason uniform change which has yet to be unveiled. Advantage Hawkeyes on the uniform front.
