Jason Terry, 2011

This one is a wild ride. Jason Terry tattooed the Larry O’Brien Trophy on his arm while playing for the Dallas Mavericks in 2011. He had the tattoo done in October of 2010, while LeBron James was already well-established in Miami with Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade.

The Dallas Mavericks surprised many by making it to the NBA Finals that season, but no one outside of the team had them beating the powerhouse Miami Heat. Terry’s tattoo was destined to become a long-running joke, right? At least he hadn’t put a year on it, right?

Wrong. The Dallas Mavericks, led by Dirk Nowitzki, who may not have missed a fourth quarter shot in the entire series, defeated the Heat in six games. They won the NBA title and Jason Terry flexed that tattoo like he was some kind of genius.

Statistically, this was Jason Terry’s best season. Though Dirk carried the bulk of the load through the playoffs, Terry averaged just shy of 16 points per game in the regular season, upping that to almost 18 points per game in the playoffs.

What is also interesting is that Terry and Nowitzki were the only two remaining Dallas Maverick players from the 2006 championship when the Mavs lost to Wade and Shaquille O’Neal’s Miami Heat. This season clearly meant something to Terry.

This was a case of a guy placing the ultimate bet on himself and winning. This was a true success story. As any gambler will tell you in retrospect, though, you should definitely quit while you’re ahead…
