Can Tom Wilson just not for once?

Clearly there was no feeling-out period needed for the Vegas Golden Knights and the Washington Capitals, but Jonathan Marchessault felt this hit from Tom Wilson.

The Washington Capitals are in the Stanley Cup Final for the first time in 20 years. The Vegas Golden Knights are in the Final in their first year of existence. Only two players total in this series had ever played in the Stanley Cup Final before Monday night, so there has to be a sort of feeling-out period, right? Wrong.

This game has been wild since the opening festivities put on by the Knights. If you want to count 0-0 ,then this game has been tied a total of five times with another five lead changes. It’s been a wild game all around, but this really wouldn’t be a Capitals hockey game without a bone-crushing hit by forward Tom Wilson.

I’m all for big hits by the bruising forward, but I’m sure everyone could have done without this hit on the Golden Knights’ Jonathan Marchessault.

Wilson absolutely levels Marchessault in the neutral zone after he had clearly dumped the puck into the offensive zone. You don’t have to be the biggest hockey fan to know that you can’t do that.

What’s even more shocking is that the refs didn’t call a penalty until after they huddled together and had a discussion about it. Even then, it ended up as matching minors because of a cross-checking penalty by David Perron on Alex Ovechkin away from the play.

Wilson has already been suspended once this postseason, and thanks to this bone-headed play he could very well be facing another one. Wilson plays hard, but he also walks a fine line — and quite frankly, if the Caps want to win the Cup they can’t afford these kinds of plays from an important player on their top line.
