16. Craig Ludwig’s pool party that Guy Carbonneau almost ruined

When the Dallas Stars won the Stanley Cup in 1999, Guy Carbonneau decided he wanted to continue the Cup-meets-pool tradition at defenseman Craig Ludwig’s house. The only problem was that he misjudged the distance.

Like any attempt to jump or throw something from a balcony to a pool, Carbonneau came short. The Cup slammed on to the ground at the edge of the pool, allegedly leaving a dent that can still be seen today. Imagine being that guy?

While this story has been contested and said to be false, it has been rumored to have happened by enough people to warrant suspicion. As they say, where there’s smoke, there’s fire.

The Cup win itself was one of the most controversial wins of all time. Brett Hull scored the game and Stanley Cup winning goal in the third overtime period of Game 6 with his foot very visibly in the crease (not allowed at the time).

This wasn’t the tip of the blade or anything. Hull had his entire foot in the crease, right in front of an outstretched Dominic Hasek. Had the goal been reversed, Carbonneau would have never been at Ludwig’s party, there would have been no tossing of the Cup and no (alleged) left-over dent.

Way to go, refs.
