14. Ken Kilander steals the Cup

(Disclaimer: The man photographed above is Lil Jon, not Ken Kilander, and he is not stealing the Cup, it just looks like he is and the photo works too well here)

An elimination game against the Chicago Blackhawks in 1961 had die-hard Montreal Canadiens fan Ken Kilander upset. Things were clearly not going the right way for the Habs, so Ken decided he would take matters into his own hands. Literally.

Kilander left his seat, ran down to the Chicago trophy case, broke the glass and made off with the Cup. Fortunately, he only made it down the hall toward the exits before he was captured by security.

Bold move by Ken, but he showed the kind of love and care hockey fans have. Ken claimed he was just trying to return the Cup to its rightful home in Montreal.

Who hasn’t wanted to do this? It could be a bad call from the referee, a key injury or a shot that took a lucky bounce beating your team’s goalie. Sometimes you, the die-hard fan, just know that your team actually deserves the Cup.

Thankfully for the Cup and the teams vying for it, security is tighter these days and the Cup isn’t left in Trophy cases unwatched. Could you imagine if our friend Ken had made it out of the stadium with the Stanley Cup?

I’d be at the bar, doing my best Mark Messier impression.
