Big time names met their stunning ends on an iZombie season 4 finale that felt more like a series finale.
iZombie’s season 4 finale went way above the call of duty expected of a season finale, feeling like an end to the entire series. Clearly, the show’s cast and crew prepared for the chance the series would not be renewed because they went all out. Let’s raise the curtains on what happened right now: Chase Graves, Angus ‘Brother Love’ McDonough and Levon did not make it. It seemed like all three would be naturals for a potential season 5 but again, the episode concluded as if the series itself had seen its final silver screen Fin.
The season finale also raised many universally relatable what if questions. It explores the butterfly effect when Liv tells Major if he had never kidnapped her, Levon would be alive. To which Major instantly responds, “But you’d be dead.” When the nation decides to cease all brain shipments into New Seattle, it asks the viewer unconsciously what they would do in such a situation from the outside looking in. If there was a city of contagious people (as the zombie virus), how would the general population handle it?
Quarantine until starvation or humanely keep them going? In iZombie the outside populous has decided to end the experiment of coexistence. However, on the inside both human and zombie are moved by Liv/Renegade’s documentary of helping people. Instead of rage over lost brain tubes due to sharing, it unites both sides of the equation rather than see the other as less than.
Blaine admits to his father, there was no real sign from above

Blaine and his father Angus send the flock out to cross the border against heavy fire, with contrasting perspectives. Blaine wants to go to the rooftop to watch the action from above, putting both him and his father out of harm’s way. However, Angus finds such an act cowardly and tries to convince his son to join the flock’s rush. Blaine explains leaders don’t fight in the front lines and that his father is too valuable to the cause. When his father reiterates his wish to join the flock, Blaine tells him the truth, there was never a sign from up above. That the snowing brain was just Don putting brains through a wood chipper with a fan.
Angus is genuinely disappointed and takes back what he’d just told him about his mother being proud of the man he became. Blaine tries to get his father to at least wear a helmet to avoid a shot to the head but Angus refuses as he charges into battle on a horse. He doesn’t live another day as he ends up being shot in the head, Blaine’s worst fear. Blaine is later so down he has one of his workers play a version of Russian roulette hoping she’d take him out. At first look his father is gone and his investments outside of New Seattle have no worth putting his businesses into crushing debt.

After news breaks out that the rest of the nation has decided to cease brain shipments to New Seattle, Ravi decides to leave Peyton a voicemail telling him not to come back to New Seattle. He starts speaking about how an uprising and chaos is inevitable and she’s better off staying in Washington D.C. even though he loves her. Peyton surprises him and he feels an immense sense of relief that she came back. As we saw in her support of Liv as Renegade, Peyton is not afraid of putting her safety up to help those she cares about.

Despite being pushed by Fillmore-Graves’ Enzo Lambert who uses brass knuckles on her, Liv won’t give up the names of the rest of the underground railroad. Chase has Enzo put makeup on her to prepare a one minute goodbye to her friends. During which, Liv tells Clive about the documentary they filmed and its location. She asks Clive to release it online so her work as Renegade won’t be in vain.

Liv’s Renegade documentary featuring scratchings of the physically ill goes viral. Hundreds of thousands view the video and her support goes through the roof… So much so Chase has no choice but to move to a private execution under the advice of Hobbs. Word spreads as Peyton goes on a cooking show on television as acting Mayor to talk about the warehouse execution being moved three hours ahead of the proposed public one.
Even Fillmore-Graves own soldiers are unsure of Chase’s actions as they watch the Renegade documentary on the way to the execution.

Before Liv is question by Enzo she tells Levon how much she loves him and he responds in kind. Chase brings the two to a warehouse early in the morning asking his crew to fire at anyone who attempts to barge in to rescue them.
Levon is the first to be executed with his last words an attempt to convince Chase to use his power to unite humans and zombies together. It has no effect on Chase who utilizes the guillotine before Levon even finishes his sentence. Liv is a destroyed person after this moment.
Major goes zombie, gets shot by Chase
Major is the first to burst through the doors after asking Clive to punch him in the face to go total zombie mode. He yells “Noooooooo!” as Liv is being prepped up for execution. The rest of Fillmore-Graves does not shoot in confusion as Chase shoots Major in the chest.
The distraction leaves enough time for Liv to free herself momentarily and take control of the situation by attacking Chase with his back turned.
Chase Graves goes under the guillotine
In the ensuing scuffle, an emotional, distraught Liv takes revenge on Chase by throwing him on the guillotine. Chase’s abrupt execution leads the rest of Fillmore-Graves in a state of bewilderment. They stand down and Major is looked at to command. Despite reluctance towards taking the mantle, he understands he must lead. Major tells Liv she can smuggle as many people into New Seattle as she wants now in the open, Fillmore-Graves won’t stand in her way.
Major also invites Blaine and Don E. to Fillmore-Graves and agrees to forgave his debt in exchange for utilization of his brain smuggling services. He tells Blaine from now on they’ll be looked at as local heroes instead of scoundrels. That their ‘bad guy’ days are over and Fillmore-Graves will be happy to lend assistance to increase the smuggling twenty-fold.

Liv is inconsolable after Levon’s death and wants to give up being Renegade forever. Ravi offers her the chance to be human from consuming Isobel’s brain as a cure. However, just as she’s about to do it, she and Ravi are called upstairs for Clive and Dale’s impromptu wedding. Clive talks in his personal vows about being willing to give up being a father to be with the one person he loves the most and to become a zombie.
Liv decides to give Dale the ultimate wedding present, the chance to be human again. An opportunity for Clive and Bozzio to be parents. A sacrifice that will not be forgotten.

The underground railroad convinces Liv that they’re not so underground anymore. They can hang out at the pool instead of a hotel room. When she walks out she’s greeted by human and zombie fans of Renegade alike clapping in unison. Liv is touched by the moment and realizes that she’s brought both sides together. Her proposal to retire from the label of Renegade was too early. Renegade’s work is just beginning.
