Angels at Tigers

Angels Probable Starter – Shohei Ohtani, RHP

3.35 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 32.3 strikeout rate

Vs LHH – .185 average, .230 wOBA, 28.9 fly ball rate and 33.3 hard contact rate

Vs RHH – .210 average, .296 wOBA, 49.0 fly ball rate and 38.8 hard contact rate

Ohtani is extremely tempting at just $9,000 knowing the type of upside he carries on the mound. Detroit doesn’t carry the highest strikeout rate against righty pitching but they also aren’t a very good offense either. They’re middling at best and the righties they have aren’t that imposing. If Ohtani can get by Nicholas Castellanos, he should be able to handle the rest of the lineup. Here’s what gives me pause in this spot. It’s been 10 days since Ohtani has pitched last. Now, that’s not the end of the world. He typically gets a longer period of rest between starts anyways. However, it’s worth noting. Maybe he’s not as sharp as normal with the layoff. It’s either you play Ohtani or stack Detroit. Trying to pick a one-off isn’t going to be worth the effort.

Tigers Hitters to Target

Elite Options – None

Secondary Options – Nicholas Castellanos, Jeimer Candelario

Tigers Probable Starter – Mike Fiers, RHP

4.78 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 15.2 strikeout rate

Vs LHH – .272 average, .369 wOBA, 44.7 fly ball rate and 32.5 hard contact rate

Vs RHH – .280 average, .338 wOBA, 43.2 fly ball rate and 35.6 hard contact rate

It would appear that we don’t need to worry too much about the splits with Fiers. He can’t strike batters out, he’s giving up a lot of hard contact, and then he’s giving up a ton of fly balls on top of that. The Angels are in a great spot and they rival the Nationals as a stacking option. Mike Trout is obviously one of the best plays on the entire slate in this matchup despite his price tag. Andrelton Simmons is also attractive and has a relatively “safe” floor. We’ll see how the lineup shakes out but just about any hitter is going to be viable.
