The 2018 World Cup officially begins with the opening ceremony. We break down what you need to know about the 2018 opening ceremony.

The opening ceremony of the 2018 World Cup will take place on June 14, 2018 at the Luzhniki Stadium in Russia. While the schedule has been set and the field has been announced, there is precious little information available about the opening ceremony and who might perform in it.

As a rule, opening ceremonies are a pretty big deal. Not only do they celebrate the start of the sporting event, like the Olympics, but they’re also a way for the host countries to show off a bit. After all, worldwide sporting competitions like the World Cup and the Olympics put the host countries on the biggest stage of all, so of course you’ll see a lot of fanfare and more than a little braggadocio.

Traditionally, whoever sings the official song usually performs. Jason Derulo was given the honor of performing the 2018 World Cup song, “Colors.” Whether he makes an appearance in Russia remains to be seen amid all of the secrecy surrounding the big event. Along with the official song, however, is the official anthem and the official mascot song, all of which are modified based on language for certain markets.

Past performers in World Cup opening ceremonies include Pitbull (2014), Il Divo (2006) and who could forget Ricky Martin’s “La Copa de la Vida” in 1998?

More details about the opening ceremony will likely be released as the big day approaches, but expect to see a lot of local Russian flair highlighting the best the host country has to offer. When you’re on the global stage, you have to show off a bit, right?
