The award for the most polarizing head coach at the Group of Five level hands down goes to the head man at the helm for the Florida Atlantic Owls, Lane Kiffin. In past jobs with programs like the Tennessee Volunteers and the USC Trojans (and even the Oakland Raiders), Kiffin did not leave on a positive note.

However, getting back together with Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide as the offensive coordinator for a National Championship Game run in 2016 seemed to right the ship for Kiffin. He’s now righting the ship for Florida Atlantic, who had a nice run last season.

Since then, Kiffin has recruited to an amazing degree with a program like FAU. He brought in some nice pieces last year, at least enough to take the Owls to the potential of a top 25 program this year. Most preseason rankings and way-too-early top 25’s you look at will display the Owls in those pieces.

Without a doubt, Kiffin is one of the coolest head coaches in the nation. The fact that he’s getting everything together with FAU means even greater things for his coaching career. He could only climb up this list by trending up like this.
