Kansas City Chiefs: David Amerson vs. Steven Nelson

The Kansas City Chiefs lost a major piece of their defense this offseason, when Marcus Peters left for the Los Angeles Rams. Peters was a key on a defense that helped the organization to multiple AFC West titles, and it will be interesting to see how they decide to replace him atop the depth chart at cornerback.

Also this offseason, the Chiefs signed former Oakland Raiders cornerback David Amerson, who was a starter on one of the worst secondaries in football in Oakland last season. Amerson is expected to challenge for the top spot at cornerback for the Chiefs this offseason, and it looks like Steven Nelson will be his major competition.

The Chiefs did get Kendall Fuller from the Washington Redskins when they traded away Alex Smith, but Fuller is likely to be the team’s nickel corner in 2018. Amerson is a guy who has a lot of physical gifts, but he was never really able to put it all together during his time with the Silver and Black.

Nelson was a third round pick of the Chiefs back in 2015, and has yet to nab an interception in his career. His best season as a pro came back in 2016, when he defended 16 passes, while starting 15 games for the Chiefs as a 23-year old.

The Chiefs have a very interesting season coming up, as Patrick Mahomes will be taking over for Smith at quarterback as a first-time starter in the league. He is going to experience some ups and downs, and without a leader like Peters in the secondary, the defense will likely experience some as well in 2018.
