Dallas Cowboys: Geoff Swaim vs. Rico Gathers

During the 2016 NFL season, the Dallas Cowboys were the class of the NFC, all the while doing it with rookies leading the way. Starting quarterback Tony Romo broke his back in the preseason, and fourth-rounder Dak Prescott was forced into action.

All Prescott did was lead the Cowboys to the best record in the NFC, being helped along the way by fellow rookie running back Ezekiel Elliott. Elliott led the NFC in rushing yards, proving to be worth the first round pick the team spent on him that April.

Last season, the Cowboys took a step back, but that was because they were without Elliott for six games due to a suspension. In 2018, Elliott will be back in action for the 16-game slate, but they will now be missing two very big weapons in their passing game.

Wide receiver Dez Bryant was released by the team this offseason, and future Hall of Fame tight end Jason Witten decided to call it a career. Witten is one of the best tight ends in the history of the game, so it will be up to either Geoff Swaim or Rico Gathers to replace his production.

Swaim looks to be the starter as the team headed into OTAs, but Gathers is the best pass catcher of the group. If he could ever reach his potential, he would be a solid weapon in the passing game, but in order to do so, it looks like he is going to have to beat out Swaim for top billing on the Cowboys depth chart.
