Jacksonville Jaguars — Josh McCown

The Jaguars are that friend who gets a new job with a huge pay raise, then buys all these things they can’t really afford. But they’re using credit cards, so it’s not a problem at first. Then the interest catches up with them and they’re stuck.

By 2019, the Jaguars will have the second-worst cap situation in football, $38 million over the cap. The day of going out and spending in free agency are on hold for a while. So, who can they get who would make them better, but they could also potentially afford?

How about a career backup who could be one injury away from leading a team to the Super Bowl? The biggest flaw on this roster wears No. 5, but the Jaguars committed to Blake Bortles and this team became too good too quickly to draft his successor.

McCown could come in as a backup and give them a solid veteran presence behind Bortles and a potential stop gap at quarterback if there’s an injury. The days of getting paid like a starter or even a preferred backup will probably be over by 2019, and that’s assuming McCown even wants to be playing at that point.
