Chicago Bears — Jason Verrett

Ryan Pace went heavy on offense in the spring, signing big-money deals for Allen Robinson and Trey Burton. Next offseason could be all about defense.

With $27 million to spend, good enough for 12th in the league, the Bears need to address its cornerback situation with an aging group behind Kyle Fuller. Complicating matters, Bryce Callahan hits free agency and while he’s not a world beater, the Bears relied on his versatility in Vic Fangio’s defense.

Jason Verrett could be the antidote. The Chargers are $6 million over the cap for 2019 and might not be able to afford to keep such a talented cover corner. Verrett injects speed into this secondary, as well as the ability to play the boundary or the slot.

In a division with Kirk Cousins, Matthew Stafford, and that Aaron Rodgers guy, the Bears can never feel like they have too many corners. Chicago hopes to have found itself an offense this offseason, having spent lavishly on Trey Burton, Allen Robinson and Taylor Gabriel, along with the hire of Matt Nagy. If those moves largely work out, the Bears could be a few defensive upgrades away from a solid team in 2019.
