Each NFL team’s biggest breakout candidate

Philadelphia Eagles – Derek Barnett
The Eagles got plenty of production out of 2017 first-rounder Derek Barnett in his rookie season, but an increased snap count could lead to an even more productive season in 2018.
Barnett, the draft’s 14th overall selection, was featured primarily as a rotational pass rusher last season for the world champion Eagles, playing in just under 50-percent of the team’s defensive snaps. But with Vinny Curry off to Tampa Bay via free agency, Barnett will be counted on to be a more regular force in the team’s pass rushing attack.
Barnett’s game relies less on pure athleticism or power than it does on excellent technique, particularly with his hands. One aspect that could also help his development is the addition of Michael Bennett via trade from the Seattle Seahawks. While Bennett’s legal situation is yet to be sorted out, his veteran presence should help the development of Barnett in 2018.
With the impending return of Carson Wentz at quarterback, the Eagles look poised to make another deep playoff run. While Wentz and the offense will get a majority of the headlines early on, look for Derek Bennett to make a big impact on the defensive side of the ball. If all goes well, a double-digit sack season is well within the realm of possibility.
