Every sports fan base has its diehards, and every fan base has its celebrities. But some celebrities are just as much of a diehard as anyone else.

Now that we have reached the culmination of the NHL playoffs, also known as the Stanley Cup Final, it’s a great time to reflect on what has been an incredible hockey season in 2017-18. For the first time in NHL history, there were 31 fan bases cheering on their teams this year.

While those fan bases are made up mostly of diehard hockey fans, casual hockey fans, and new fans getting introduced to the game, each of those fan bases also have at least one well-known celebrity fan as well.

Hockey is a game for everyone to enjoy, and many celebrities are just like the rest of us — when their favorite team is playing, they like to don the colors and cheer them to victory.

So, without further ado, let’s highlight the biggest celebrity superfan for all 31 NHL franchises.

Anaheim Ducks: Emilio Estevez

Here’s something that shouldn’t come as a shock to anybody. Actor Emilio Estevez, who was the star of the Disney film The Mighty Ducks, is a fan of the Anaheim Ducks. It makes complete sense.

The Mighty Ducks was released in 1992, and Estevez played the lead character of Gordon Bombay, an attorney who was eventually forced to coach a Pee Wee hockey team called the Mighty Ducks. The success of the original film later spawned two sequels, with Estevez reprising his role of Coach Bombay in the second film.

A year after the release of the original film, the Walt Disney Company then founded an NHL expansion team based in Anaheim, California, just down the street from Disneyland, and it was initially called the “Mighty Ducks of Anaheim,” named after the movie. It’s actually kind of a neat concept when you think about it.

The Mighty Ducks name stuck around from the team’s inception in 1993 until 2006. At that point, Disney sold the team and it was renamed to the much less cheesy “Anaheim Ducks.” But nevertheless, Estevez involvement in the film series has left him hooked on the Ducks for life. He has frequently shown support for the team on Twitter, often making references to the Mighty Ducks films and his character of Coach Bombay. He has even made trips to watch the team play when they have made it to the Stanley Cup Final.

Unfortunately for Estevez, his Ducks didn’t leave him with much to cheer for in 2017-18, as they were swept out of the first round of the playoffs by the San Jose Sharks. But maybe Estevez and his team will have better luck next season.
