2018 NBA Mock Draft: Who’s moving at the top?
Melton’s jumper just looks better every time we are given a glimpse into his progression, as we were Tuesday when ESPN’s Jonathan Givony tweeted a video of his form on a series of corner 3s. If Melton can continue to grow as a shooter, he becomes a much more interesting fit next to Devin Booker in Phoenix.
With a 4.0 steal percentage and 3.9 block percentage as a freshman, plus incredible playmaking efficiency and solid shooting from 2-point and free-throw range, Melton looked the part of an all-around combo guard after one season at USC. Now, he’s had an additional year away from competition to grow into that role and show NBA scouts that he’s ready to contribute as a pro.
The Suns, especially if they use the No.1 pick on Deandre Ayton (spoiler alert for the end of this mock), will need to address the wing with their other draft picks, especially at 16 and 31. Grabbing Melton here to defend point guards and handle the ball as a secondary playmaker would be a great investment. His defense should translate right away, while his offensive game could come along slowly while Ayton and Booker absorb the majority of the offensive possessions.
A Melton-Josh Jackson duo on the wing could be terrifying for opposing offenses, and would protect Booker as well. If they upgrade with a veteran, he would be an awesome third guard.
